Artist Biography
James Martin Griffin (1850-1931)
Griffin was a California landscape and nature scene painter. His works were realistic and naturalistic in style. He painted in the Bay area of Northern California. He taught painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco.
Born/lived: Cork, Ireland/Bay area of Northern California.
Known: realistic, naturalistic landscape and nature scene painter in oils and watercolors.
Studied: Cork School of Art, Ireland under James Brennon.
Member: Watercolor Society, Ireland; San Francisco Art Association.
Exhibited: San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exhibition; San Francisco Art Association; Mark Hopkins Institute; Mechanics Institute; San Francisco Art Association.
Taught: taught painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco. He also lectured, did workshops and wrote.
Work: Oakland Museum.
